Normally my blog posts are fairly long, but today I wanted to keep it short and bring you a little bit of old school internet charm by highlighting a cute little independent browser game.
Messenger, the topic of this post
Since Flash was discontinued in 2020 I’ve been missing little free browser games. Independent browser games are emblematic of the free wheeling, scrappy, weird and unique side of the internet, the side of the internet that I came to love when I was young. To me, stumbling upon little browser games (sometimes on StumbleUpon) was the digital equivalent of coming across a homemade zine in a coffee shop.
As the internet has gotten more and more boxed into 3 - 5 websites (or apps if you're on mobile), that feeling of stumbling across someone’s unique little art project has become harder and harder to find, so today I wanted to highlight a fun little game I came across recently called Messenger.
Messenger is a short open world game where you go around a tiny planet collecting and delivering messages to characters. The cute cute cell shaded art style, relaxing music and the fun of walking around this tiny little planet pulls you into this little diorama of a world and makes for a charming and relaxing playthrough. For me, coming across Messenger really brought back that feeling of discovering a fun little secret on the internet, so instead of rambling on further, why don’t I just link the game and let you in on this fun little internet secret.
